The first football league in Spain was The Catalan football championship (Campionat de Catalunya), established in 1901. After the creation of the La Liga, The Catalan football championship co-existed with the national league for some years until it was cancelled in 1940.
SC Bastia is a football club from the city of Bastia on the island of Corsica, founded in 1905. The club is known for its strong local identity, passionate supporters, and the intense atmosphere at its home ground, Stade Armand-Cesari. Throughout its history, Bastia has moved between the top two divisions of French football, often being seen as a resilient and unpredictable team.
The club’s golden era came in the 1970s. In the 1976–77 season, Bastia finished as runners-up in the French top division, which qualified them for European competition. The following year, they produced one of the most memorable European campaigns by a French club, reaching the 1978 UEFA Cup final after eliminating several strong opponents. Although they lost the final to PSV Eindhoven, the run remains the highlight of their history.
Bastia won the Coupe de France in 1981, adding another major achievement. In later decades, the club experienced financial difficulties, relegations, and rebuilds, but managed several returns to Ligue 1. In 2015, they reached the final of the Coupe de la Ligue. Despite ups and downs, SC Bastia remains a symbol of Corsican football culture, known for its fighting spirit, loyal fanbase, and deep connection to the island.
